MAIN  CONCERTS  SCHEDULE  HISTORY  MUSIC  ALUMNI  MEMBERS

February 23rd, 2003

As C-term comes to a close, the glee club is intensely preparing for their upcoming tour.  33 members of this fine organization will be representing WPI in an overseas tour of Southern Italy.  Through rigorous fund raising such as leaf-raking, computer raffle, spaghetti dinners, and various performances, we were able to come together as a club and bring as many people on tour as possible.  While we don’t have any concerts before tour, be sure to check us out after our arrival in the states.

From me to you - greetings:

In 1966 I arrived at WPI as the first professor of music. Music on the hill was in chaos. Through these many years we have grown with the college as witness the 113 students in basic music theory this past term. When I met the Glee Club for the first time in the fall of '66 there were thirteen people. In the spring there were 46.

We now have three choirs - the women (Alden Voices) a mixed choir (Concert Choir) and the WPI Men's Glee Club - right now 41 men. I had expected to resign from the glee club as director in 2002 but several things have prompted me to reconsider. The enrollment in the women's choir is at an all time low of 13, with 8 expected in the next term. The Concert Choir is doing well under Mrs. ruth Cooper - the instructor in voice. The Glee Club is rebuilding but still sings with Smith, Wells, etc. and is off with the Concert Choir and Clark University, accompanied by ten professional musicians (Doug Weeks and crowd) to Ireland for performances of King David of Honneger in March.

Three organizations (and three a cappella student groups) - three conductors all with different programs - no central direction. That bothered me. The only way to cure this was for me to resign and clear the slate and I have done just that.

As of 2001 - 2002 there will be one conductor for all groups with a staff position which will be full time. The proper agencies and journals will be notified and applications entertained from across the nation, This is my decision for the benefit of the college and was to come soon anyway, as I will be 67 in June. Thirty-four years of one conductor is maybe enough. I shall retain my professorate and have applied for a sabbatical for fall of 2001 and teach until cir.70.

For those who have sung and performed with me - I shall always remember you and I thank you for your efforts which placed me in "WhoÕs Who In America" and the WPI Men's Glee Club in a high standing squeezed in between Harvard, Amherst, and Cornell. That's a lot of pressure! I will see you in the spring for the Alumni Concert.

With my best,
Louis
