Hi, my name is Emmanuel Yu and this is my MAMS website! I am 16 years old and a junior in Mass. Academy at the time of writing. I come from the sending school of Shrewsbury High, practice taekwondo and the piano, and am also the oldest of three siblings. If you want to get to know more about me, scroll down to read more. If you want to know more about my Mass. Academy academics, click on one of the tabs on the top of the screen to check it out.
After 16 years, I have lived across the country. I was born in 2008 in California but moved over to Connecticut not even six months after. My family stayed in Connecticut for two years before we moved to Chicago for three. During that time, my brother Samuel was born in 2012. Finally, my family settled down in Shrewsbury, where we still live and which is where my sister, Arielle, was born in 2021.
As a part of my bio, I have been living with type 1 diabetes for the past 11 years since I was five years old. T1D is a condition where my pancreas can
no longer regulate the amount of sugar in my blood because its cells have been destroyed by my own immune
system. Despite this, I would say that I’ve grown to be able to manage my condition pretty well (and I hope
my nurses and doctor would agree) and I hope to tackle something relating to this condition in my own STEM
project this year. So far in my Mass. Academy experience, I would say that switching communities from SHS
to MAMS was one of the biggest hurdles for me to get over. I was anxious to leave behind the community that
I was able to build in Shrewsbury, but despite this, I’ve only been attending Mass. Academy for two weeks and already
am enjoying the community here as well. At the time of writing (August 27th), I would say my favorite
Mass. Academy teacher would be Mrs. Chase (don’t tell the rest of them) and my favorite class would be STEM.
Since I was 6, I have been practicing both the piano and taekwondo (here's the link to my dojang). I’ve been able to compete and place in the Elite International Music Competition for the piano twice (aiming for three!) and I am also a 3rd degree black belt in taekwondo. For piano, I enjoy being able to play beautiful music for others, while for taekwondo, I enjoy being able to see myself improve and teaching other students what I have learned. I also played the viola for five years from 5th to 10th grade in my school’s orchestra program, but I have decided to no longer continue playing the instrument after transferring to Mass. Academy. From Shrewsbury High, my sending school, I’ve participated in their Speech and Debate team, DECA Business club, and was voted on as a Student Advisory Committee member for two consecutive years before transferring to Mass. Academy.
Recently, I’ve been able to visit my extended family in Taiwan for the past three summers. Every summer, my family and I always try to visit our family in Taiwan, as most of our extended family lives in that country. I was lucky enough to be able to spend this past summer with my grandparents for five weeks and we even went on a trip together to visit Singapore (as shown in the picture on the right)! I hope to be able to visit sometime again soon, but if not, I will still love the food, culture, and city life of Taiwan.
Coming soon at the end of my community service!
