Ballroom Dance Team

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the time commitment of being a member of the Ballroom Dance Team?
A: The time commitment for team members varies from person to person. We have members who come to one lesson every week, members who come as often as we allow them, and everything in between! Members who choose to compete will have more of a time commitment than those who don't, simply because of the competitions themselves, but each member can decide whether to dedicate two hours each week or more.

Q: What is the cost of being part of this club?
A:. The only manditory cost for members is dues - $10 per term. Aside from that, any money spent through the club is voluntary. Many members opt to purchase dance shoes ($45-$60 per pair), and if they choose to attend competitions there is a per-competition fee as well ($15-$45 per competion). Social dancing generally incurs a fee as well (usually around $5).

Q: Do I have to compete?
A:. Absolutely not! Competition is a completely voluntary part of the organization, and many members choose to never set foot on a competition floor. The structure of the club is designed to make good dancers - whether they choose to become competative dancers, or social dancers.

Q: Can I get gym credit?
A: Yes! Ballroom dance offers Gym Credit based on attendance. All you have to do is sign in at the beginning of each lesson, and out again at the end.

Q: I really want to learn Ballroom Dancing, but all of the guys on my floor tell me that it's for girls. What can I say to them?
A: You're right, it is for girls... and you'll get to meet all of them!

Q: Do I need a partner?
A: Not at all. Most of the lessons are arranged so that you'll dance with many different people throughout, so chances are good you wouldn't dance with your partner more than once. Besides, just because people get along well doesn't necessarily mean that you'll dance well together - coming in with an open mind is definately a plus.

Q: Do I need prior experience?
A: Not at all. It is rare that we get someone coming into the organization with prior ballroom experience. And, while having prior dance experience is helpful in the beginning, after the first few classes everyone will be on very equal footing.
