STW or Science and Technical Writing has proven to be a very interesting class with Dr. Sumner. In the class we learn different writing styles and better ways to write scientific papers such that our research projects can be in the best condition for the science fair at the end of the year. This class has been very helpful for improving my writing skills so far and I'm sure there will be even more information to come.
1. Sentence Types: Global Cooling In this assignment we chose an article relating to our research project and wrote about it using compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences
2. Autumn Nature Writing For this assignment we were to go to a special secluded spot in a natural environment and write about it using correct writing style and keeping the theme.
3. Nobel-Rosalind Letter This assignment was interesting because we were to discuss our viewpoint on the fact that Rosalind Franklin, despite her great efforts in the discovery of the structure of DNA, was not awarded a Nobel Prize. The unique twist was that we were to write the essay in the form of a letter to the Nobel Prize Committee itself and Dr. Sumner actually mailed them to the committee. I found this very… unique.
4. Winter Nature Writing Just as the Autumn Nature Writing Assignment we wrote about our special place and how it was affected by the new season.
5. Leprosy Research Paper Our Task for the Disease paper was to research a randomly assigned disease and work together with a group on a presentation. This was a very interesting assignment and i learned a lot about leprosy that I never would have known had I not done this paper.
