What is Biomedical Engineering?

"Biomedical engineering integrates physical, chemical, mathematical, and computational sciences and
engineering principles to study biology, medicine, behavior, and health. It advances fundamental concepts; creates knowledge from the molecular to the organ systems level; and develops innovative biologics, materials, processes, implants, devices and informatics approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, for patient rehabilitation, and for improving health. "
NIH working definition of bioengineering - July 24, 1997

Within Biomedical Engineering, there are several concentrations or areas of study. These include biomechanics, biomaterials, biomedical imaging, biosensors and instrumentation, and tissue engineering. For a description of each specialization and the types of things a person in that area may research, visit the WPI BME Department Page.

What is the Biomedical Engineering Society?

BMES is a national professional society that was started on February 1, 1968 in Illinois. There are now more than 87 student chapters at colleges and universities in the United States. The purpose of BMES isĀ "To promote and enhance biomedical engineering knowledge worldwide and its utilization for the health and wellbeing of humankind."

  • Learn about internship, REU, and job opportunities.
  • Hear from guest speakers in the industry.
  • Gain leadership experience by becoming an officer.
  • Obtain answers to any other questions you may have about biomedical engineering.
