About Me

Where I'm from

Hi! My name is Abigail Wren. I am a junior at the Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science (Mass Academy.) My sending school to Mass Academy is Sutton Memorial High School . Before coming to Mass Academy, I went to school in Sutton since kindergarten. At SHS, I was in the chorus, drama club, community service learning club, the National Honors Society, and on the JV Volleyball team.

Stuff I like to do

I have been in community theater (click here for the company's site!) productions since 4th grade. Theater started out as something I did just because a few of my friends were doing it, but now it's a borderline-obsession of mine. I was member of the Sutton High School Drama Club for two years before coming to Mass Academy. Leaving Sutton meant I had to leave this group of crazy, awesome, kind, and talented people. I had the opportunity to play some pretty diverse roles at my school- including a drug addict and a 1920’s socialite. My sending school drama dept. mostly put on plays, but I love musical theater, too! Two of my favorite musicals I have been in are Mary Poppins and Anything Goes. I love the dedication to one another and the production that develops within a cast over the rehearsal process of a show- not to mention that the feeling after finishing a performance is one of the best in the world!

I volunteer at my church in Sutton, MA, Lifesong. One of my responsibilities is teaching 3 and 4-year-olds. 15-18 preschoolers make for a crazy Sunday morning, but I love every minute I am with them. I have also been able to gain a lot of experience with set design through volunteering at Lifesong Church because I am able to occasionally spend some afternoons painting, gluing, and building props for our different monthly themes in Lifesong’s children’s ministry program. I also participate in various outreaches that the church runs. One of these outreaches I was a part of was a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Our youth group spent a week in Puerta Plata running a Vacation Bible School Camp for local kids of all ages in July of 2016. I cannot wait to go back someday!

As you probably could have guessed from my little spiel on theater, I am super into music- specifically, singing. In 7th grade I started singing in barbershop acapella workshops. (Here is a video of a performance from a barbershop summer camp I went to in 2016.) School-wise, I have been in chorus since 5th grade. I love the feeling of being in a chorus! (I especially loved my SHS chorus family ♡) Now that I am no longer a part of Sutton Schools I sing with the Festival Choir and Alden Voices at WPI. I have also been lucky enough to participate in the Massachusetts Music Educators’ Central Districts Choir as an alto (even though I’m kind of starting to like singing soprano). I take voice lessons in Worcester, MA. In my lessons, I work on mostly showtunes and classical pieces, but I also enjoy singing old-timey country and popular songs, too. Come to think of it, I love to sing pretty much anything!

Community Service

Every junior at Mass Academy is required to complete at least fifty hours of community service before the beginning of the senior school year. I have done a mix of community service activities to fulfill this requirement.

I was already a Sunday school teacher at Lifesong Church in Sutton, MA before coming to Mass Academy. I typically work with four-year-olds. I love singing, playing, and eating Goldfish with them on Sunday mornings. Also, I was a team leader for a group of grade-age kids at Lifesong’s summer vacation Bible school program. VBS at Lifesong is a week-long camp full of outdoor activities. Like Sunday school, there was a lot of singing and snacks at VBS. I did find working with older kids (because I am so used to preschoolers) to be a different (but positive!) experience because they are so independent. You can watch a video with some clips of the week at 2017 VBS here.

In the summer of 2017, I taught ukulele lessons at the Sutton senior center. I loved getting to share the enjoyment that is playing ukulele with such awesome people!

Through Mass Academy, I helped at a school open house. I hung around the classrooms and shared my experience as a Mass Academy senior with parents and kids interested in the Academy. Also, I proctored at a Pi Day Math Competition for middle schoolers through Mass Academy. I’m not on the Mass Academy math team, and I had never been to a math meet before the Pi Day Math Tournament. I’m glad I helped out because I got to watch a bunch of kids be super excited to take multiple math tests all day, which is not something I see often.
