Myths
Recruitment Counselors

Myth: Collegiate members are only nice to you during recruitment. Once you become a new member, they haze you and make you do all kinds of humiliating things to earn your way in.
FALSE! Alpha Gamma Delta, like all NPC organizations, is a non-hazing sorority. We believe in strengthening our members' self-confidence, not in dragging each other down. Our main goal is to make our New Members feel comfortable here. If anything, we spoil them!

Myth: All members come from wealthy families, and their parents/guardians pay for everything including their sorority dues.
FALSE! Our members come from all different economic backgrounds. Many Alpha Gams work at least one job, and pay their own dues. Alpha Gam teaches its members to balance school, work, and the social aspects of college.

Myth: If you join a sorority, you're expected to party and drink, even if it means your grades suffer.
FALSE! Alpha Gamma Delta places the utmost importance on grades and school, and encourages every member to do her best. Members must obtain a certain GPA or privileges to attend social events are revoked. And most importantly, Alpha Gams do not pressure one another to party. This is not an expectation for belonging to our chapter.

Myth: Sorority girls hate other houses and women not in sororities. If you join a sorority, you can't talk to any other girls.
FALSE! Most Alpha Gams have very close friends in other houses, or who don't belong to a sorority. We also play intramural sports with other houses, do service projects, and have sorority socials and exchanges frequently.

Myth: The only thing sorority girls are interested in is looking good for the fraternity men. If you join one, you always have to look perfect or you'll be "dragging down the house's reputation."
FALSE! First of all, we are not obsessed with what the fraternity men think. Second, we appreciate the fact that everyone has her own style, whether it's a closet full of dresses or jeans. Our reputation is based on our personalities and values, not hairstyles or clothes.

Myth: All sorority girls are skinny, blonde, and large-chested.
FALSE! The proportion of Alpha Gams who look like this is equal to the proportion of such women in society. Sorority girls generally reflect the population of the entire student body.

Myth: If you can get into a sorority without being a skinny, large-chested blonde, the girls will make you lose weight and change the way you look.
FALSE! At Alpha Gamma Delta, we believe strongly in being ourselves. The individuality and genuine nature of the women in Alpha Gam are two of the main reasons potential new members are drawn here in the first place. We would never encourage anyone to change the way she looked unless she wanted to and it was a healthy decision.

Fact: Alpha Gamma Delta is a diverse group of girls who are all supportive of their sisters. We are very focused on working hard in classes and staying active on campus. With almost 60 sisters, we enjoy spending time with each other at socials, formals, campus events, and simply hanging out. We offer support to our new members with our 14 Pearls Program, sister-mothers, and the close bonds we form with them. We are proud to be a part of an international sorority and support our Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation which raises money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
