Recruitment Counselors

Check out some of the most frequently asked questions about recruitment. If you can't find the answer to your question here, contact your recruitment counselor or Samantha Wentzell (swentzell@wpi.edu), Alpha Gam's Recruitment VP.

What is the purpose of a sorority?
A sorority is a sisterhood. A group of women who share, work, and learn together. Sororities promote high scholarship, personal development of individual members, leadership, good citizenship, and lifelong friendships. Sorority life is designed to enhance your college experience. There is always someone to talk with you, someone to share you accomplishments and help you through problems. A woman can examine her personal values and learn more about herself through continuous interaction with her sorority sisters. A sorority woman's interests are far from being confined to within the sorority. The sorority acts as a nucleus for a woman to branch out in new directions as the sorority keeps its members informed of constant activities and information involving both campus and community. The sorority offers responsibilities that challenges a woman as an individual. Each sorority is self-governed, and it is every member's duty to assist with this. A sorority is not what you get from it, but what you become through it.

What is Membership Recruitment?

Recruitment is the mutual selection process by which sororities choose their new members and potential members select the chapter in which they feel most comfortable. Should you choose to go through Recruitment you will attend events with each sorority on campus. You will meet the members, learn a little about each chapter and their social and service activities, and become acquainted with sorority life. It is also an opportunity to ask questions, define financial obligations, time commitments, and membership requirements.

If I go through Recruitment, do I have to join a sorority?

You are not obligated to join if you participate in Recruitment. It is a great time to meet people and evaluate the Greek lifestyle.

Will sorority membership affect my grades?

High academic standards are strongly emphasized by all sororities. It is true that depending on how much you want to be involved, joining a sorority can take up a lot of time. Ultimately it has helped most girls to develop better time management skills. Being in a sorority allows members to study together and help each other with difficult subjects. We even have a library with old text books and notes to be used as study aids. Many girls' grades actually improve after joining a sorority!

Why should I join Alpha Gamma Delta?

Imagine having a group of friends that you can always count on. Friends who will help you through hard times and share joy with you during the good times. Friends that love you no matter what your faults may be and friends who are always there to support you. Becoming a member of Alpha Gamma Delta is to gain a group of friends that consider you a sister. Alpha Gamma Delta cherishes each member and is concerned with her well being. Being a part of Alpha Gamma Delta is something special. It is as unique as every member who is a part of it. Alpha Gamma Delta welcomes anyone with the willingness, motivation, and dedication to join this circle of friendship that will ultimately last a lifetime.

What is a Recruitment Counselor?

A Recruitment Counselor is a member of any one of the three sororities at WPI. She will answer questions, listen to concerns and offer advice about anything regarding the sororities with an unbiased approach. She cannot reveal which sorority she is a member of until after Formal Recruitment is over. The reason for this is to make potential members feel comfortable talking with their Recruitment Counselor about any of the sororities and to not have to worry about offending the RC or getting a one-sided response.

I'm not ready to join a sorority now. Will I be able to I join some other time?

Yes. Occasionally a sorority will have a spring pledge class if it is under quota. Alpha Gamma Delta also participates in Continuous Open Recruitment (see the next question).

I am an upperclassman who went through recruitment last year but did not join a sorority. Do I have to go through formal recruitment again in order to join a sorority?

It is a good idea to go through formal recruitment again. It will give you a chance to meet more of the sisters from every sorority so you can make an informed decision about which to join. However, if you are absolutely set on not going through formal recruitment again, it is still possible to receive a bid. If a sorority is under quota (currently set at 80 members), it can use a process called Continuous Open Recruitment. Through this process a sorority can give a bid to an upperclassman at any time of the year. If you accept the bid you will participate in the same new member activities as everyone else, so you won't miss any part of the new member experience. If you have any questions about this you can contact Samantha Wentzell (swentzell@wpi.edu), our Recruitment VP.

How do I choose between the three sororities?

Most likely, after you have gone through all the rounds and the preference party, you will have a good feeling as to which sorority you will be happy in. If you can't decide, talk to your Recruitment Counselor. She will help you figure out which sorority will be the best for you.

I really like one sorority, but my friends are pledging the other. What should I do?

Go with the sorority that feel right for you. You can still be friends with people who join other sororities!

How much will joining a sorority cost?

It depends on the sorority. The total dues per year for Alpha Gamma Delta are:

New Members: $435 + badge fee (varies by personal choice)
Sisters living in the house: $420 ($140 per terms A-C)
Sisters not living in the house: $570 ($190 per terms A-C)
