E-tutor is an intelligent tutor that helps middle and high school students learn to solve equations.
E-tutor is part of my master's thesis which proposed to implement an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) for solving linear equations. This ITS incorporates dialog between the student and the ITS to tutor middle school children in algebra. This involved studying effective techniques used by experienced math tutors and imitating them in the ITS. In addition to modeling student behavior and common mistakes in solving linear equations, E-tutor models effective human tutors' responses to these mistakes. My hypothesis is that an ITS that incorporates tutorial dialog will result in higher student learning when compared with an ITS that does not. E-tutor is a model-tracing tutor that is based on the award-winning intelligent
tutoring system Cognitive Tutor developed by Carnegie Learning. The tutorial dialogs in E-tutor draw upon the award-winning and patented Ms Lindquist,
dialog-based tutoring system.
